Does Betelgeuse die in Beetlejuice 2?

Betelgeuse (aka Beetlejuice), played by Michael Keaton, is a ghost/demon from the Neitherworld, so he technically can’t die. However, the ending partly implies that he is destroyed. Astrid (Jenna Ortega) proves that Betergeuse’s contract with Lydia violates what’s mentioned in the Handbook for the Recently Deceased, and Lydia chants his name three times. This causes Betelgeuse to pop like a balloon. But, towards the end of the film, Lydia has a vivid nightmare in which she sees the trickster entity again, indicating that it might still be out there somewhere, and Lydia has only just succeeded in banishing it.

There are several characters in the film who die in unexpected, funny and morbid ways. Some supernatural entities suffer a fate that seems equally permanent.

Charles and Delia

Lydia’s father from the first film, Charles, dies at the beginning of this one, forcing the rest of the Deetz family to return to Winter River. His wife and Lydia’s stepmother, Delia (Catherine O’Hara), dies from snake bites later in the film. Eventually, she and Charles reunite in the Afterlife and take the Soul Train together.

jeremy

Jeremy (Arthur Conti) died 23 years before the events of Beetlejuice. It is revealed that he murdered his parents before being accidentally killed by police officers. In the film, he is sent to a hell-like realm by Betelgeuse.

Rory

Rory (Justin Theroux) is Lydia’s boyfriend in the film. But, just as they are about to get married, he reveals that he was exploiting her. He is eaten by a sandworm that Astrid summons.

Dolores

Delores (Monica Bellucci) is Betelgeuse’s ex-wife from the time of the Black Death. She has since become a soul-sucking entity that seeks out her ex-husband. Like Rory, she is also swallowed by the sandworm.

Ricardo

Richard (Santiago Cabrera) is Lydia’s ex-husband and Astrid’s father. He disappeared in South America and is later revealed to have been eaten by piranhas. He helps Lydia save Astrid from Jeremy and later assists them on their journey back to the mortal world.
