Developers plan to build a massive housing complex in Bedford County

BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) – One of our hometowns is looking to give people more housing options.

A total of 184 homes could be on the way as developers push to rezone an area in the town of Bedford.

The project includes new public streets, utility infrastructure, and needed open spaces with amenities such as parks, benches, and walking trails.

Developers hope this will provide more housing options and say it will not negatively impact existing neighborhoods.

However, residents share concerns about traffic problems and sewer capacity.

“We ask that you make sure they get a bond and keep it in place if you allow this to go forward, which covers all the work that doesn’t seem to be getting done on their projects for us,” said Governor’s Hill Section 1 Homeowners Association President Cindy Watson.

“We think what we’re doing is probably the best way to develop this property and provide housing in the city, which is really needed,” said Jamey White, president of White Engineering & Design, Inc.

The planning commission did not vote Thursday and plans to hold another public hearing at a later date.
