A Galveston City Sheriff’s deputy was on his way home when he saw a man suspected of murdering a Harris County Sheriff’s deputy.

Galveston, Texas – As KPRC 2 continues to learn more about the murder of a Harris County Pct. 4 deputy, we are learning more about how his alleged killer was apprehended.

BACKGROUND: A Harris County District 4 deputy constable was killed while on his way to work

Galveston City Sheriff’s Sgt. Nicholas Yeley explained how the arrest unfolded in an interview with KPRC 2 reporter Corley Peel, noting how descriptive the gunman’s vehicle was at first. From there, it was a situation where everyone had to work together.

“They were very descriptive, which allowed us to be vigilant and alert,” he explained. “We were all on alert. We were all on the lookout. We wanted to find that person.”

Despite having waited a long time, Sergeant Yeley said things looked bleak and his shift was about to end.

“All day long, we were looking and nothing,” he said. “I went to the exit and I was getting ready to go home and I got in my personal car … and I went home to talk to my father.”

That’s when things took an unexpected turn and the sergeant had to cut off the phone call with his father.

“I happened to look out and said, ‘Dad, I have to go. I’ll call you later.’ And there was the suspect’s car in a parking lot. He was pulling into the parking lot and, by pure chance, I was in the right place at the right time,” Sgt. Yeley explained. “I was supposed to find him and call the troops.”

Because he was not in uniform, he was able to act quickly and call Galveston police to arrive and arrest the suspect. When the suspect realized he had been spotted, he sped away in his vehicle, prompting a brief pursuit by authorities.

While in the area of the Causeway Bridge, the suspect drove his vehicle into the water. Houston Transtar cameras saw him swimming in the water before police brought a boat to pick him up.

However, within minutes, officers managed to catch the gunman, which completely caught Sergeant Yeley by surprise given how long he had been waiting and searching for the gunman.

“It took a lot of heroes to do what they did,” he said. “And they need the recognition. I was there, in the right place, to put them in the place they needed to be. It’s a phenomenal feeling, don’t get me wrong, but those are the heroes that got it done.”

Although Sergeant Yeley did not know Officer Husseini directly, they shared a relationship through law enforcement.

“We are all brothers and sisters,” she said. “We are a big community, but we love each other. And he is like an extended family to all of us. That’s all. It hurts. We are all there mourning with this family.”
