Weight Loss Myths to Avoid

We’re in the final days of summer, and as fall approaches, many of us will be looking to shed some weight before the holiday season. But before you jump into any new diet, fitness expert Michael Wittig joined News On 6 with weight loss myths you’ll want to avoid.

Myths

Myth 1: You have to go on a diet

“You don’t have to be on a diet. Granted, there are a lot of crazy diets out there. Some are a lot harder than others, and I’m not saying they aren’t helpful, but you don’t have to go on a crazy diet to lose weight. You just need to eat in a balanced calorie deficit… You don’t have to cut out so much to be healthy.”

Myth 2. “Supplements are essential”

“You don’t need to take supplements to lose weight or be healthy. They can help a little, but if you don’t eat right and exercise, they’re a complete waste of time and money.”

Myth 3. “Avoid all carbohydrates”

“Carbs are not bad. We don’t have to avoid them. There are different types of carbs. Of course. You can eat some good carbs or you can eat a lot of sugar and sweets, which are also carbs. Carbs are necessary macronutrients. We just have to balance them and maybe eat a little less. But we don’t have to avoid them.”

Myth 4. “Healthy foods are expensive”

You know what’s expensive? Starbucks and eating out. And I don’t want to hate on Starbucks, but going out somewhere and spending money on fancy drinks or eating out every day is expensive. Eating natural, healthy foods isn’t expensive in comparison.

Myth 5: “Do cardio to lose weight”

“You don’t have to do cardio to lose weight. It’s helpful, good for your heart health, and can help burn extra calories. I helped my son lose 30 pounds without doing a minute of cardio. It’s all about eating right and getting some steps in, or just being active throughout the day.”
